Setting an Intention for your Yoga Practice is the First Step
December 6, 2019What is Sickness?
What if fitness is the opposite of sickness?
This concept was taught to me during my certification process, and it is now more apparent to me than ever before! Because we don’t collectively agree objectively on the difference between healthy and sick, our conclusion tends to be subjective and reactive: I wake up, feel alright, carry on my day without the need of prescription medication or a doctor visit . Therefore, I am healthy because I am not sick.
The proactive approach to avoiding sickness should be done by using objective data to tweak lifestyle choices. The goal being to maintain optimum health without the need for over-the-counter or prescription medication whenever possible. Identifying objective values to measure sickness, wellness and fitness, and using that continuum to define health is currently working in the fitness industry.
OVERSIMPLIFICATION: The fitter you are, the less likely you are to get sick, and the sicker you are the more likely you are to get really sick. The accompanying chart shows the specifics in each category.
The top reasons for hospitalization are age, obesity and heart failure.
Right now, people are needing hospitalization and they are dying from exposure to COVID-19. Why some and not others? Obesity and heart failure are not only contributing to the current problems we are facing with COVID-19, but they are the main causes of death annually in the US. Obesity is the pandemic that our country has failed to address and that we refuse to acknowledge. In 2020, there are plenty of things outside of your control, but YOUR HEALTH does not have to be one of them. You don’t have control of the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, but you DO have control of your fitness. Getting fit will not only make your body more equipped to fight viruses, but it will put you on the frontline in the fight against obesity and other metabolic disorders. The solution to preventing COVID-19 is complex, but the solution to preventing obesity is simple: Get moving. Use the numbers, be proactive and take control.
Now let's finish our game, what is the opposite of sickness?
Although we accept age as a "risk factor" for diseases such as COVID-19 and the seasonal flu, next time we'll explore why accepting the norm can be detrimental to your health.
